Home Vegetable Gardening as a Relaxing Hobby
Many people decide to try their hand at home vegetable gardening as a way to engage in a relaxing hobby and enjoy fresh, tasty vegetables. Before planting your vegetable garden, you will need to pick the perfect spot in your yard. Your back yard is often an excellent location for growing vegetables because there is less foot traffic than in the front yard.
Make sure that whatever part of your land you choose it receives at least 6-8 hours of sunlight every day, good soil, and receives enough drainage. This will usually mean that it will be further away from the house to avoid being shaded at certain times of the day.
In order to have a successful garden, you'll need to prepare the soil before planting. When your soil is well prepared it will be able to help your plants take in air, water and nutrients more efficiently. This will help your plants to achieve the best root development. The exact process you must follow to prepare your soil will depend upon what type of soil you are dealing with.
You will need to evaluate the type of soil you have to determine what soil amendments may be necessary. If the soil contains heavy clay or excess sand, you should cover-crop and plow the garden early in the spring. If it is a heavy sod soil, you can plow it several times, starting 1-2 months prior to planting. Late fall can be an ideal time to start soil preparation in anticipation of the spring planting season.
Tilling your garden is an important step for several reasons. Firstly, this ensures that your fertilizer or other soil amendments will distribute evenly in your growing space. Additionally, tilling loosens the soil and readies it for seeds or new plants. However, you should refrain from deep tilling as this may cause helpful organisms in the soil to be killed off. Work through the topmost few inches and avoid compacting your soil for best results.
To have a successful vegetable garden, you must have well-drained, fertile, deep soil. The type of soil is not as important as the texture and quality. Your soil must be free of stones and well drained. You can add any nutrients the soil needs in the form of organic compost.
Arranging the garden is a necessary step. You should not plant without knowing first where every seed is going to go. First, you must determine which vegetables you will grow. Certain kinds of vegetables can't grow next to each other. But varieties of lettuce, greens, beets and other veggies that don't need a lot of room for growing can typically get planted near each other, which works well for small gardens. Place vegetables that require a lot of room such as potatoes, melons, and pumpkins in a common planting area, away from smaller vegetables. Once you have placed them in appropriately spaced rows, label each row to make it easier to track their growth.
