Slug or pigeon damage (not to mention frost)?

In an attempt to save what was left of the plants I buy organic slug pellets from Camden Garden Centre. I always feel a bit funny about resorting to slug pellets. There seems something underhand about poisoning. But unable to find the slugs in or around the plot I didn't think we were left with many options. I guiltily sprinkle them around the plot and hope our plants will have chance to recuperate.
