Seven Tips For Selecting Your Home Garden Greenhouse

Isn't it every gardener's dream to have a home garden greenhouse? Just thinking about digging your fingers in the dirt as the snow is falling outside is enough to make your green thumbs tingle! But getting started may be a bit daunting. A few considerations before buying your greenhouse will help you make a better decision and prepare you to realize your dream.1. First, decide what kind of plants you want to grow in your garden greenhouse. Are you planning on keeping tropical plants through a snow-packed winter? Do you want to grow enough vegetables for all your winter meals? Or do you want a space to just winter over a few plants? These decisions will impact the size of your greenhouse as well as the placement and the materials used.2. Determine the best placement for your home greenhouse. Since the sun is a key factor, south facing in the winter is preferred if possible, but a little shade isn't a bad thing either. Just make sure there aren't any trees around that will shade the structure and limit the sunshine reaching your plants.3. A level location is essential. If you can't find enough level ground to accommodate a free standing greenhouse, then you should consider getting a structure that attaches to a wall on your home or a fence.4. Depending on the plants you wish to grow and the area in which you live, you may choose wall or ceiling panels that are made of glass, plastic or the increasingly popular polycarbonate material. Also think about any strong weather tendencies in your area like wind, hail, strong sun or heavy snowfall. Some of the newer materials are manufactured to withstand many or all of these conditions.5. Whether you plan to use your greenhouse during both the winter and the summer, both the cold and hot temperatures will affect your plants. Think about installing a heater and ventilation system that helps control the temperature inside the greenhouse regardless of what's happening outside. The ventilation system may consist of a couple of adjustable windows while the heating system may be supported by electricity, gas, or oil.6. What will be your water source? If you place your greenhouse against a wall of your house, a faucet may be easily installed. Otherwise, you may need to run a hose to the structure or plan on carrying buckets of water!7. Think about shelving and storage. What spacing will your plants need and how many shelves or flat surfaces will work? Also consider using floor space for storing potting soil, buckets, tools and pots.Take the plunge and continue growing all year round with your home garden greenhouse. A bit of advance preparation helps you create your own custom greenhouse where you can spend many, many relaxing hours while enjoying your gardening hobby.
