Several types of Garden greenhouses

There are various varieties and lots of sizes of greenhouse being used these days. The glass to ground having a span roofing has high eaves and vertical sides. It is better suited to growing carnations, tomato plants and lots of other plants requiring lots of light. The maximum amount of light is admitted warming the floor therefore conserving temperature.

Brick based spanned roof greenhouses had been mostly built in Victorian days to grow pot plants and are entirely unsuitable for tomatoes as well as carnations and so forth. They are still available today with a timber base. They usually have some form of staging, the bottom of which may be used for storage space only because nothing will grow here.

The Dutch type span roof features sloping sides which slope outwards. It is usually glazed to the ground and so suited to plant which need to have ample light. There is certainly one drawback with this particular style being unable to accommodate taller plants close to the glass sides.

The lean-to greenhouse is only recommended now where there isn't a suitable site for a span roof type. For maximum protection from the wind this kind is best built facing south. They have an advantage of attaining some heat radiated from the house wall. There are a large number of lean-to houses, most of these tend to be glass to floor and others have timber bases. The Nederlander sort lean-to may provide a good width and can be fixed against relatively low walls.

The three quarter span greenhouse is merely a modified lean-to which allows some north light to enter. Berry trees for instance peaches could be grown or decorative climbers as these may be trained against the high wall.

To provide the best of both worlds a dual purpose garden greenhouse can be obtained. These types of houses are glazed to the ground on one side only, the other side being boarded up to supply winter season storage for fuchsias, dahlia tubers as well as other plants.

The real key element to a successful green house would be to admit the maximum amount of daylight as you possibly can.

Answer by Tom R
NC being north carolina right?

I can grow tomatos year round in my green house in maine, so yea, you can grow what ever you want.

just make sure you have a adicuate heating system installed and your good to go!

peas, letice, radishes, beets, all can survive frost, so as long as you get above freezing in the day, and dont dip down extreamly low (below 0 ferienhite) you may not need extra heat.

Victoria Day Weekend Update on the Greenhouse Gardens

Over Victoria Day Weekend we did some work around the yard and in the greenhouse. We added mulch to the pathways between the raised beds in the greenhouse. Most of the plants in the greenhouse have grown really well over the last few days but we do have some problems with a gopher feasting on some things like our broccoli. www.gettingtheregreen.com
